What should be checked on a forklift prestart check

6 June 2023

During a forklift prestart check, several components and systems should be inspected to ensure safe and proper operation. Here are some key areas to check:

  1. Tires: Check the condition and pressure of all tires for any damage or excessive wear. Ensure that they are properly inflated.
  2. Fluid Levels: Check the levels of engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant, and fuel. Top up or refill as necessary.
  3. Battery: Inspect the battery for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Ensure it is adequately charged.
  4. Controls and Instruments: Test all the controls, including the horn, lights, gauges, and warning devices, to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  5. Brakes: Test the parking brake and service brake to verify their effectiveness. Ensure the brake pedal has proper resistance and does not sink to the floor.
  6. Steering: Check the steering system for any excessive play or stiffness. Test the steering response while driving in both directions.
  7. Forks and Attachments: Inspect the forks for cracks, bends, or other damage. Ensure they are securely attached and can move freely.
  8. Mast and Chains: Examine the mast, lift chains, and hydraulic cylinders for any signs of wear, leaks, or damage. Ensure the chains are properly tensioned.
  9. Safety Devices: Check the operation of safety features such as seat belts, lights, alarms, and the overhead guard.
  10. General Condition: Assess the overall condition of the forklift, including the frame, body, mirrors, and safety decals. Look for any loose or damaged parts.
  11. Workplace Traffic Management Plan: The Australian Standard requires forklifts to have a traffic management plan to operate. Do you have and understand the Workplace traffic management plan specific to your workplace?

It’s essential to consult the forklift’s operating manual and any specific guidelines provided by the manufacturer for a comprehensive prestart checklist. Adhering to these checks helps ensure the forklift’s safe operation and minimizes the risk of accidents or breakdowns. Your forklift prestart check should be carried out at the start of each shift, daily, after a change of driver or when the forklift hasnt been operated for a period of time.
